Counselling for Depression
Depression is something many of us experience at various points in our lives, and occasional feelings of being overwhelmed or lost are completely normal. However, if these feelings become persistent or you begin to notice a recurring pattern, counselling may offer valuable support. It can help you understand what’s contributing to these emotions and provide strategies to break the cycle and regain a sense of balance and direction.
Addiction Counselling
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective approach for understanding the patterns of thought and behavior that influence our lives, including those that contribute to addiction. Addictions can take many forms, and some may feel difficult or uncomfortable to discuss with family or friends.
Counselling provides a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can openly explore your personal challenges. Together, we can identify what is driving unhelpful patterns and work toward practical, meaningful strategies for change.
Anxiety Counselling
Anxiety is an emotion originally designed to protect us. In early human history, both humans and animals developed anxiety as a survival mechanism. It alerted us to imminent danger—such as the threat of a predator—or signaled when we needed to fight or flee to stay alive.
However, despite significant changes in our environment over thousands of years, this emotional response has remained with us, even though it is no longer needed to the same extent. In many ways, we have unintentionally strengthened it; for some individuals, anxiety now functions at a level far beyond its original purpose. As a result, the impact can be profound and very real.
Anxiety can be limiting and may interfere with our ability to engage in the activities and experiences that matter most to us. It manifests differently for each person, and when it becomes chronic, it often has detrimental effects. Long-term stress and anxiety can contribute to emotional distress and increase the risk of developing serious health conditions.
Counselling provides a space to explore the triggers and underlying factors that contribute to anxiety. Through this process, individuals can gain insight, develop strategies for intervention, and work toward reframing unhelpful thought patterns—ultimately supporting healthier, more adaptive ways of thinking and coping.
My Approach to Counselling
Before we get into my approach, let's look at some big questions.
First of all, what is counselling?
Counselling is a space where a person chooses to speak to a Counsellor about what's been going on in their lives, challenges they are facing or personal difficulties they are experiencing, with the sole purpose of trying to make things better.
What should my Counsellor be like?
First of all you need to like your counsellor, and they cant be one of your existing friends. A Counsellor should be someone you do not have an existing relationship with; if you already did, you may not trust what they have to say. Counsellors should be kind, non-judgmental, genuine, and unconditionally positive towards you. Counsellors should be professional, attend regular supervision, and also counselling for themselves. Counsellors should formulate a contract with you to give you an idea of what to expect and an agreement on how you will work together. Your counsellor needs to have relevant counselling/psychotherapy qualifications and also be engaging in continued professional development. It's important to choose a counsellor who is qualified in your chosen modality, (person-centered, cbt, transactional analysis, relationship counsellors, gestalt, psychodynamic ect..) different modalities suit different people's needs. It's also important to feel comfortable and at ease with your counsellor.
Why Shining Through?
My primary counselling approach is person-centred, enhanced with cognitive behavioural techniques when helpful. Person-centred counselling focuses on empowering you and supporting you in discovering the solutions that feel right for your life. No two individuals are the same, so what works for one person may not work for another. Together, we take a gentle, collaborative approach to explore your experiences and identify the path that feels uniquely right for you.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques can be valuable tools in this process. They help you examine and challenge unhelpful or automatic negative thoughts, allowing space for more balanced and constructive thinking. CBT can offer insight into the patterns that may be holding you back and support meaningful change.
Because every person’s needs are different, CBT is used only when appropriate and always on a case-by-case basis. My aim is to tailor your therapy to what will best support your wellbeing and personal growth.
A little bit about me:

My name is Rosie. I’m a bright, warm, and colourful person, as well as a mother of two. Throughout my life I have faced a range of challenges—including grief, loss, depression, domestic abuse, and homelessness. I am proud to say that I have not only overcome these adversities, but continue to grow, heal, and strengthen myself every day. These experiences shape who I am and deeply inform the compassion and understanding I bring to my work.
I began my counselling training at 21 and qualified at 25. I am currently furthering my professional development by studying for a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Counselling. Ongoing learning is essential in our field; it allows me to stay aligned with ethical standards, adapt to developments in counselling and psychology, and continually refine my skills.
I have had the privilege of working with individuals from many different backgrounds, each with their own unique experiences and challenges. Every client has taught me something invaluable and helped me grow as a practitioner.
I am an open and honest person, and I strive to create a space where others feel safe, heard, and supported. My hope is that my authenticity and humility help bring comfort and clarity to those who come to me for counselling.
